Understanding Trauma and Its Effects

Trauma isn’t just something that happened to you in the past, it’s something that can live on in your nervous system, your relationships, and your sense of self. Whether it stems from a single overwhelming event or from prolonged experiences of neglect, instability, or relational harm, trauma can shape how we see ourselves, how we connect with others, and how safe we feel in our own bodies.

Common effects include anxiety, dissociation, difficulty trusting others, chronic shame, hypervigilance, and patterns of self-protection, such as ultra-independence or perfectionism. These once helped us survive but now get in the way of the life we want. Healing is possible, and it starts with understanding what happened and how your mind and body adapted to it.

Whether you are dealing with past trauma or the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), our trauma therapy services  will help you move forward.

Our Approach to Trauma Counselling

We integrate EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Transactional Analysis (TA) to offer a layered, trauma-informed approach to healing.

EMDR helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they no longer carry the same emotional charge. IFS helps you build a compassionate relationship with the different “parts” of yourself, including the protective parts that developed in response to pain, so healing happens from a place of curiosity rather than judgment.

Transactional Analysis offers insight into the relational patterns, scripts, and roles we learned early in life, helping you understand how past dynamics show up in present-day relationships.

Together, these approaches support healing that is somatic, relational, and deeply respectful of your internal system.

Why Work With Us?

Our team is trained specifically in trauma-informed care, and we take that training seriously, including through our commitment to supervising and mentoring the next generation of trauma-informed clinicians. This means our therapists work under a shared framework grounded in safety, collaboration, and evidence-based practice.

We believe healing happens in relationship, at a pace that respects your nervous system, and with deep respect for your autonomy and lived experience.
You’ll be met with curiosity, skill, and care.

The Myth of Normal- Gabor Mate

The idea of what is normal is a social construct. When we take a real look at why we are the way we are and how we got to be that way we realize that medicine, mental health and society has imposed views and "blame' on aspects of our lives that should be considered simply human. This is a must read.
Racial Trauma

My Grandmother's hands- Resma Menaken

The book explores how racialized trauma lives in the body, passed down through generations. It offers practices for healing trauma held in Black, white, and police bodies alike. A powerful read for anyone exploring how historical and cultural trauma shapes present-day nervous system responses.
