Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy
Understanding your parts. Reconnecting with your Self. Healing from the inside out.
Introduction
At Conscientia Counselling, we offer Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy to help
individuals navigate their internal world with clarity and compassion.
IFS is a powerful, evidence-based approach that sees emotional distress not as dysfunction, but as a sign that inner parts of us are struggling, often carrying pain or playing protective roles developed through lived experiences. By getting to know these parts and relating to them from your core Self, healing becomes not only possible—but transformative.

What is IFS?
Internal Family Systems (IFS), developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, is based on the premise that the mind is naturally multiple. We are not just one unified personality but a system of inner parts, each with its own unique perspective, feelings, needs, and goals. These parts are not imagined or pathological—they’re real aspects of who we are.
IFS identifies three primary types of parts:
- Exiles – These are parts that carry emotional pain, trauma, shame, or fear. Often young and vulnerable, they are “exiled” or pushed away to protect us from overwhelming feelings.
- Managers – These are proactive parts that try to keep us safe by controlling situations, planning, perfecting, or preventing emotional pain from surfacing.
- Firefighters – These reactive parts jump in to put out emotional fires when exiles break through. They might use impulsive behaviors like substance use, overeating, or numbing out to distract from distress.
At the center of the IFS model is the Self—a compassionate, calm, confident core within each of us. When we are able to access the Self, we can connect with our parts, understand their intentions, and help them release burdens they’ve carried for too long.
How Does IFS Work?
IFS therapy is a non-pathologizing, collaborative, and deeply integrative process.
Your therapist acts as a guide while you:
- Notice and identify parts that arise in response to thoughts, emotions, or situations
- Build relationships with these parts—especially those that feel extreme, reactive, or conflicted
- Understand the roles your parts play and why they developed those roles
- Access your Self, the natural leader of your internal system
- Help parts “unburden” the pain, beliefs, or trauma they’ve been carrying
- Restore harmony so each part can take on a healthier, more supportive role
Importantly, IFS is not about eliminating parts, but understanding and healing them. All parts are welcome and inherently good—they simply took on extreme roles in response to life’s challenges.
