EMDR Therapy Calgary

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a relatively new therapeutic approach developed in the 1980s by Francine Shapiro. She discovered by chance that eye movement significantly reduced the intensity of her connection to traumatic experiences. She was a psychologist and began research with military personnel, finding that their symptoms decreased dramatically as well. This led to the development of EMDR therapy.

EMDR Treatment

EMDR treatment is ideal for clients struggling with traumatic flashbacks or memories. People often don’t realize that there are different types of trauma. There is acute trauma, like a car accident, abuse, or an assault, but there’s also what we call in the psychology field, “lower case trauma.” Lower case trauma consists of smaller, ongoing events that, for some people, may not seem significant, but for others, they can result in lasting changes in who they are.

Trauma isn’t defined by what happens to you; it’s about how your body and mind react to what happened. For example, two people could experience the same event, such as a dog charging towards them. One person might have a panic attack, while the other sees a cute puppy. The difference in reaction is often due to previous trauma.

EMDR doesn’t erase the memory, but it helps calm the nervous system’s reaction to that memory. It allows the nervous system to not react as strongly to memories or triggers and helps reprocess the trauma. This process helps you find new meaning in the traumatic experience.

When we experience trauma, we sometimes create what’s called a faulty or maladaptive network. We may tell ourselves stories about the trauma, often blaming ourselves. EMDR helps reprocess those memories, decreasing their emotional intensity and helping us see them in a healthier, more adaptive way. This is particularly important for trauma experienced in childhood, where we may not have had the capacity to fully understand the events. EMDR helps reframe those stories and move beyond self-blame or avoidance of activities due to past trauma. At Conscientia Counselling, we can help you through this process.

EMDR Therapist

EMDR therapy is growing in popularity, especially in Calgary, but it’s crucial to ensure your therapist is properly certified. EMDR should only be administered by a certified EMDR therapist. There are individuals claiming to practice EMDR without the proper certification, which can lead to re-traumatization. Certification in Canada is regulated by EMDR Canada, which works with the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA). If a therapist isn’t certified by these bodies, it’s best not to proceed with treatment.

You can verify certifications on the EMDR Canada website, and as a client, you have every right to ask your EMDR psychologist about their qualifications and training. In Alberta, counselors are not regulated, meaning anyone can call themselves a counselor. This lack of regulation is a significant ethical issue, and we are working to advocate for change. Conscientia Counselling’s owner is a member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) board in Alberta, actively working to push for regulation.

In order to get the best EMDR therapist it’s critical that you ask your therapist about their credentials and ensure they are qualified, whether you’re paying out of pocket or through insurance.

At Conscientia Counselling, we have certified EMDR therapists who are happy to help people heal.
