Every time I thought about next steps, my brain kindly responded with a full system crash. The options were endless, the starting point was a mystery, and the only thing I knew for certain was that I wanted private practice and I wanted an office. I wanted to be surrounded by other professionals and chit-chat in the hall while we waited for clients. I didn’t want to purchase furniture or decor right off the bat, so I wanted something that was already set up. With loads of natural light, beautiful plants, throw pillows nobody asked for, and wall art that said “A professional works here” while also saying “I have a personality.” Beyond the aesthetic vision board in my head, private practice meant I could focus on my specialty areas, work with the clients I was most passionate about, and finally forge the professional path I’d been dreaming of, one carefully curated bookshelf at a time.

EMDR therapy is one of those psychotherapy methods people often talk about quietly – but with respect. Some have heard that it “works fast.” Others know it as “that thing with eye movements.” And some are convinced it’s basically hypnosis straight out of a 1990s movie. But almost everyone ends up asking the same question: how long does EMDR therapy take to work?

The short answer: it’s different for everyone.
The honest answer: let’s break it down calmly, without magic or myths.

What EMDR actually is – and why people expect fast results

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy approach that helps the brain process traumatic memories that got stuck somewhere between “I’m an adult now” and “this still hurts for some reason.”

Put simply, EMDR doesn’t so much treat as it helps the brain do what it couldn’t do at the time – properly process stress, trauma, or overwhelming emotional experiences.

In Canada, EMDR is widely used to work with:

PTSD (including veterans, immigrants, and refugees)

anxiety disorders

panic attacks

the aftermath of accidents, violence, or medical trauma

childhood trauma that suddenly resurfaces in your 30s or 40s

This is why people often look for an EMDR therapist Calgary residents trust when they want something more structured and targeted than classic talk therapy.

Why one person feels relief after 2–3 sessions, and another needs three months

This is where things get interesting.

EMDR doesn’t work like taking a painkiller.
It works more like this: what exactly is stuck, how deep it goes, and how much of it there is.

Several factors affect how quickly results appear.

The type of issue

A single, specific trauma (a car accident, a fall, one clear incident): noticeable relief often appears after 1–3 sessions

Multiple or long-term traumas (childhood experiences, toxic relationships, chronic stress): the process may take several months

Complex conditions (complex PTSD, strong dissociation): require slower, more careful work

An important point here: when someone says EMDR “didn’t work after two sessions,” it doesn’t mean the method failed. It usually means there was more material to process than expected.

The standard EMDR structure: why it’s not “one session and done”

EMDR therapy typically follows an eight-phase protocol, and not all of them involve eye movements.

It usually looks something like this:

History-taking and assessment

Preparation (stabilization and self-regulation skills)

Identifying targets for processing

Reprocessing itself

Integration of the result
6–8. Review, consolidation, and closure

This is where disappointment sometimes shows up.
A person comes in expecting “let’s fix it right away,”
and instead the therapist starts by teaching them how not to emotionally fall apart.

In Canada, this preparation phase is taken very seriously – and for good reason.

So how much time does it actually take?

If you average real-life cases, it looks roughly like this:

Mild or single trauma: 2–6 sessions

Anxiety and panic attacks: 6–12 sessions

Childhood trauma and complex patterns: 3–6 months

Complex PTSD: several months or longer

That said, early changes are often felt after the first few sessions:

emotional reactions become less intense

memories feel more distant

physical tension decreases

the sense that the past is “happening right now” starts to fade

Why EMDR can feel strange (and why that’s normal)

Some effects that can catch people off guard:

feeling very sleepy after a session

vivid or unusual dreams

unexpected memories surfacing

emotions fluctuating for a few days

This isn’t a setback and it’s not things getting worse.
It’s a sign the brain is actually working – not just talking about the problem.

A bit of humor from practice: when EMDR works but the person doesn’t believe it

A very common scenario:
Someone says,
“Well… I guess it doesn’t trigger me as much anymore. Probably just a coincidence.”

A couple of weeks later, they realize they:

no longer avoid certain places

don’t have physical reactions to old triggers

aren’t replaying the same thoughts over and over

And then the classic moment arrives:
“Wait… where did my anxiety go?”

That, by the way, is one of the most reliable signs that EMDR has done its job.

Bottom line: fast – but not a magic button

If we answer the question how long does EMDR therapy take to work? honestly:

early changes often come quickly

lasting results build gradually

the depth of the effect depends on personal history, not a stopwatch

EMDR isn’t about erasing memories.
It’s about no longer living as if everything is happening right now.

When used properly, at a safe pace, and with a clear understanding of context, EMDR can truly be one of the most effective psychotherapy tools currently used in Canada.

The post How Long Does EMDR Therapy Take to Work? first appeared on Conscientia Counselling.

Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) has long been a superstar in the mental-health world. You hear about it on YouTube, in podcasts, on TikTok; Canadian clinics rely on it, insurance plans cover it, and scientific studies cite it as one of the most evidence-based approaches out there. And then someone—fully inspired by all this brilliance – opens a laptop, clicks on an article like “10 CBT Exercises That Will Change Your Life,” and thinks: “Why not just do this myself? Why pay a professional?”

The idea feels reasonable. We live in the era of DIY—building furniture, learning languages, growing sourdough starters. But when it comes to your inner world, emotions, trauma, and deeply rooted thinking patterns, the question “Can I do CBT by myself?” stops being a simple attempt to save money and turns into an experiment with much higher stakes.

Let’s break it down: what you can safely do on your own, where professional help becomes essential, and why in Canada – where mental-health care is a core part of the culture – DIY CBT can easily backfire.

What Is CBT and Why Does It Seem “Simple”?

CBT is structure, logic, and step-by-step techniques aimed at changing destructive thoughts and behavioural patterns. On the surface, it looks almost like an IKEA manual: “identify the thought, evaluate the thought, change the thought.” And that apparent simplicity is exactly what misleads people.

At its core, CBT is like intellectual fitness training. But unlike the gym – where the worst mishap is dropping a dumbbell on your foot – psychological work can hit emotional nerves with far deeper consequences.

So why does CBT seem doable alone?

Because the internet is flooded with exercises.

Because the worksheets and diagrams look straightforward.

Because everyone knows how to think and reflect… in theory.

Because the thought “I’ll save some money” never goes out of style.

But CBT doesn’t work because of the exercises themselves. It works because of the precision in how they’re applied and the accuracy of interpreting what’s actually happening. And that’s exactly where things get… blurry without a trained professional.

What Can You Safely Do on Your Own?

To be fair – self-guided practice shouldn’t be dismissed entirely. Some things are genuinely helpful and safe to do independently:

Basic awareness of your automatic thoughts
Keeping a thought journal, noting emotions, tracking triggers – this is safe and genuinely useful.

Simple CBT exercises
For example, challenging one specific negative thought:
“If I made a mistake at work, I’m worthless.”
Common sense says this is a cognitive distortion, and examining it through self-reflection is realistic.

Practising new behavioural habits
Planning routines, tackling procrastination – these are more like morning stretches. If you mess something up, nothing catastrophic happens.

Where DIY CBT Turns Into an Emotional Roller Coaster

And now – the important part.

Deep-rooted issues and long-buried trauma
No exercise you find online will reveal what you repressed ten years ago. And trying to “dig down to the root” alone can turn into an overwhelming, unregulated re-evaluation of your entire life.

Serious conditions: depression, anxiety disorders, panic attacks
CBT is one of the main treatments for these. But trying to “treat” them alone is like attempting a root canal at home using a YouTube tutorial. You might get lucky, but the outcome is rarely encouraging.

Misinterpreting your thoughts
You can:

mistake a normal reaction for a cognitive distortion,

underestimate the seriousness of your symptoms,

invent a “diagnosis” for yourself,

pick the wrong techniques entirely.

A therapist sees what you can’t – blind spots exist for a reason.

Relationship issues
Trying to analyse your relationship patterns alone is like being the player, referee, and coach at the same time. It’s neither fair nor effective.

Why Seeing a Specialist Matters Especially in Canada

In Canada, mental health isn’t just a personal concern – it’s part of the social infrastructure. Insurance plans, private clinics, licensed psychologists and psychotherapists, and strict ethical standards shape the environment where care is delivered. This is especially true in cities where people searching for support often look for reliable, professional options such as CBT therapy Calgary to ensure they’re getting qualified help.

Most importantly – they’re accountable for the methods they use.

Self-guided CBT carries no such accountability.
Choose the wrong approach, and you’re the one dealing with the consequences. That’s essentially the main answer to the question: Can you do CBT on your own? Yes, you can. But should you? The follow-up answer isn’t so cheerful: if you bake the cake yourself, you’re also the one eating it – even if it tastes terrible. Are such risks acceptable to a reasonable person? Doubtful.

How a CBT Specialist Differs From “I’m My Own Therapist”

Professional assessment
A therapist sees thinking patterns, behavioural cycles, emotional reactions. You see only the surface.

Personalized techniques
Online resources offer generic templates.
Sessions offer what’s tailored to you.

Safe processing of heavy emotions
A therapist keeps the emotional process grounded and prevents you from going too deep, too fast.

Tracking progress and adjusting the plan
CBT relies on dynamics. Tracking your own progress accurately is hard.

Professional ethical guidelines
Your therapist won’t judge, label, or pressure you. Online forums might.

But I Still Want to Try on My Own. What Should I Do?

Here’s the safest route:

Step 1: Start small — keep a thought journal
Write down the situation, the emotion, the automatic thought, and your reaction.

Step 2: Learn about cognitive distortions
Understanding how the brain twists information is already helpful.

Step 3: Add basic techniques
For example: the “evidence for and against” method.

Step 4: Check whether you’ve gone too far
If thoughts get heavier, anxiety increases, or exercises trigger emotional turbulence – time to see a professional.

Step 5: Find a licensed therapist in Canada
This is the most important step in the entire process.

So, Can You Do CBT on Your Own?

Yes – but only in a limited, surface-level, and safe format.
For deep, effective, genuinely therapeutic work, a specialist is always necessary.

CBT isn’t just a collection of pretty worksheets from the internet.
It’s a professional, structured method that works only when guided by someone trained to see what you can’t see in yourself.

Self-guided practice can be helpful as a supplement, but in serious situations it turns into a high-risk game with no safety net. Mental health deserves better – qualified specialists with real training, certification, and years of practice.

The post Can You Do CBT Therapy on Your Own? first appeared on Conscientia Counselling.

One of the things I love the most about psychology is its scope of application. On the one hand, it studies and treats the maladaptive and pathological side of our experiences as human beings and on the other hand, it concerns itself with our potential to grow and our mental health in a positive way. Positive psychology deals and helps with ‘problems of living’. It supports those of us looking to grow and improve our lives by learning more about ourselves, by turning re-search into “me-search’, those of us that want to become more self-aware.

Lately, I have been thinking about the power of self-actualization, a concept that I learned a while ago but never gave the full attention it really requires.

Around 1940, Abraham Maslow outlined some ideas regarding our needs to either grow and become the best we can be or the need to satisfy our deficiencies (psychological and physiological deficiencies that is). This concept was reflected then on a pyramid that was called Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

The reason why I wanted to address this today is that every so often I encounter clients who are struggling with life satisfaction, or with optimal psychological health, they are feeling kind of stuck. They feel like their lives are going nowhere or like there is something missing. Keep in mind all of this is happening even though they have what most will call a ‘fairly good life’, and in some cases a life worthy of envy (in a healthy way of course).

Of course, right away I propose to them to explore the hierarchy of needs. What is that you ask? Well, as humans, we have an almost unconscious or innate desire to be well, to grow and improve our lives so that we can achieve the family, the job, the life we dream of. In doing so unknowingly or knowingly, we are climbing a pyramid of psychological needs.

More or less these are the levels:

Physiological needs. These are the needs for food, sleep, and air.

Safety or security; we all have the need for protection from violence, social and political instability.

Love and belonging. We need to feel loved and connected to others; as Sue Jonhson has found in research, we are hardwired for connections.

Self-esteem. It turns out that based on Maslow’s theory, the drive to achieve a healthy level of self-esteem is part of our journey to reach the highest and last level of the pyramid…

Self-actualization needs

Of course in the pyramid, the levels are inverted with physiological needs at the bottom and self-actualization needs at the top.

For this post, I wanted to focus specifically on the self-actualization.

Self-actualization is our tendency to grow towards the fulfillment of our highest psychological needs, the need for meaning, the embodiment of values. What does that mean? It means that we strive to maximize the use of our personal abilities and resources, we want to be the best version of ourselves and feel both challenged and accomplished. Of course, this process is different for everyone especially because we each have different ideas of what feeling accomplished means.

Let me ask you: Do you feel you are frequently performing at your full potential? Do you accept yourself for who you really are? Do you feel the need to be independent, creative and autonomous? Are you consistent at setting healthy boundaries for yourself and others? Do you feel you have access to your talents?

If you answer yes to all or most of those questions, chances are you are already on your way to self-actualization and if you answer ‘no’ to all or most of the questions, chances are you are still working through satisfying your deficiency needs; do not despair. It means you are working on satisfying your basic needs, Just be careful, it is possible that defensive and protective behaviours are getting in the way of your growth.

The next step is to feel free so you can focus on health, growth, wholeness integration and life problem-solving. Self-actualization takes time, resources (especially personal) and self-awareness. It is a journey and happiness is a side-effect. I invite you to continue to strive for it…it’s so worth it.

Why is it worth it? Self-actualized people report a greater level of well-being, and satisfaction personally, professionally and in relationships. They are more authentic and autonomous and as a result, they experience self-transcendence.

There are several self-actualization tests out there on the web. Click here for my favourite one…it has been developed by one of the leading psychologists researching the topic.

I believe we are all naturally walking towards self-actualization, even though sometimes we stall on the road either because of distorted beliefs, maladaptive traits or behaviours, outdated defense mechanisms, or even our love for ‘stability’. Whatever your reason is for stalling, I am sure you can build the capacity to become aware of it, explore it and outgrow it one little step at a time.

Share this post with someone you love…we all deserve it.

Many people wonder, When do we need a therapist? They may question whether their problems are “serious enough” to seek therapy. However, mental health is just as important as physical health, and therapists play a crucial role in helping individuals manage life’s challenges.

But how do you know when it’s the right time to see a therapist? Here are six key signs that indicate professional support might be beneficial.

1. When Stress Becomes Overwhelming

Stress is a normal part of life, but when it starts interfering with daily activities, sleep, or relationships, it may be time to seek help. Chronic stress can contribute to physical health issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and a weakened immune system (American Psychological Association [APA], 2022). A psychologist can help identify stress triggers and develop effective coping strategies to restore balance.

2. When Emotions Feel Unmanageable

It’s natural to experience sadness, anger, anxiety, or hopelessness from time to time. However, if these emotions persist for weeks or begin to impact daily functioning, they may signal a mental health condition such as depression or an anxiety disorder. Studies show that therapy is highly effective in treating these issues, helping individuals regain emotional control and improve their quality of life (Cuijpers et al., 2020). Ignoring emotions won’t make them disappear—professional guidance can make a significant difference.

Did you know that, on average, couples wait about six years after the onset of a problem before seeking help? Relationship challenges—whether with a partner, family, friends, or colleagues—can significantly impact mental well-being. A psychologist can provide valuable tools for improving communication, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation, fostering healthier connections (Gottman & Silver, 2015).

4. When Trauma or Grief Feels Overwhelming

Experiencing trauma, loss, or significant life changes can be emotionally exhausting. While time plays a role in healing, professional support can help prevent long-term emotional distress. Research shows that therapy is effective in helping individuals process trauma and grief, reducing the risk of conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Ehlers et al., 2010).

5. When Everyday Functioning is Affected

If concentration, work performance, or completing daily tasks becomes challenging, it may be a sign that professional help is needed. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and other therapeutic approaches have been shown to enhance focus, motivation, and productivity (Hofmann et al., 2012). Seeking support can help individuals regain confidence and effectiveness in their daily lives.

6. When You Seek Personal Growth and Self-Understanding

Psychologists don’t just help individuals navigate crises—they also provide support for personal growth. Many people seek therapy to improve self-esteem, build resilience, and work toward personal and professional goals. Therapy offers a safe space for self-reflection, allowing individuals to gain deeper insight into their thoughts, behaviors, and aspirations.

Conclusion

Recognizing when to seek a therapist can be life-changing. Whether dealing with stress, emotional struggles, relationship difficulties, trauma, or simply striving for self-improvement, therapy offers valuable tools for mental well-being.

There is no “right” or “wrong” time to see a therapist. If you’ve ever asked yourself, When do we need a therapist?—chances are, it might be the perfect time to explore the benefits of professional support.

Many of us are very uncomfortable with change, and even when we are ready and want to, we find that it is very hard to do or stick with it. Our brains, as well as our bodies, get stuck in patterns that are very hard to break. Additionally, for many, change is a “not safe” kind of thing. Mainly because we have been taught, that change, emotional and personal, is bad, it’s inconsistent. So the question begs: are we supposed to stay the same forever?

Change is part of the maturing and self-awareness process

Obviously, the answer is NO, that is why invite you to think about ways in which you are not allowing yourself to change, the reasons why you remain stuck either in a place in your life where you’d rather not be or with thoughts and behaviours that are standing in the way of you being the authentic amazing person that you were meant to be.

“Being your authentic self will take time and work and a lot of courage, but it is better to go through it now than to get to the end of your life and wonder “what would have happened if I had decided to really show up?”

Variables to Change

I am, of course, paraphrasing Brene Brown (with whom I am obsessed). Reading about her research made me think of how much we struggle with change. It allowed me to string together a series of variables involved in change. Variables such as self-awareness, issues from the past, mindsets, etc. all seem to be a part of our “stuckness”. Of course, we are complex beings, and as such we cannot look at change (which is also a complex process) unless we consider those variables. If you are ready to do this, this might be a good place to start.

1. Do you understand how nature and nurture in your childhood have influenced your life? We are the result of both nature and nurture, obviously, here I want to address the influence of nurture. I am talking about your Life Script, your attachment style, your core beliefs and your interpretation of your world. Have you thought recently about your core beliefs? Are you aware of which ones belong to you and which ones were passed on to you? What are some of the messages about you and the world that you picked up as a child? Have you checked and updated your defence mechanisms? Are you aware of your life script? How are the things you were told about yourself affecting or helping you today? Did you believe them? Do you still believe them? Why yes or why not?

2. What cognitive distortions do you hold about yourself and the world around you? Cognitive distortions keep us stuck because they lead us down a road of disconnection and self-deceit. The messages that we receive as children (both intended and unintended) also contribute to the way we see life. Think for a bit about in which ways are you letting your beliefs take you down the road of rejection and loneliness. What is the story you are telling yourself about the way you are loved, cared for, or seen by others? In which ways are you stopping yourself from living the life you want to live because of the stories that you are telling yourself? Review your stories, challenge them and change them if they are hurting you.

3. What is your attachment pattern? Attachment patterns play a big role in the way we connect with others. We develop these patterns in childhood and continue to apply them throughout life. It is the reason why we end up having the same relationship over and over just with different partners. This is a very deep and interesting venue to investigate, so I encourage you to look into it and discover what your attachment is. In a very simplified way, there are two kinds of attachment styles, secure or insecure. The insecure attachment style can be either: a) avoidant/dismissing, b) disorganized or c) anxious/preoccupied. When we operate from any of the three types of insecure patterns, we create disconnection, lack of intimacy, and of course unauthenticity. Click here to access a sample of the attachment assessment.

“Self-exploration is the way to take the armour off”

4. What armour do you wear when you feel threatened or vulnerable? This was a game-changer for me. Brene Brown in her books talks about the armours and the walls that we put around ourselves. She is referring to the behaviours that we engage in when we are uncomfortable when we are about to be “seen”, in other words when we are feeling vulnerable. If you have not read about this…you should. Some of the armours she mentions are cynicism, perfectionism, a know-it-all attitude (which is common for those who value intelligence), and people-pleasing.

Of course, technically there is no list because there are as many armours as people in this world, you have to find the one (s) you use. Ask yourself: How do I react when I feel vulnerable? Do I recognize the times when I feel exposed? What do I do when I feel exposed or seen? How did that behaviour serve you? What did you gain from it? How does it help you get what you want or need or deserve? What is the cost of it? What is the final cost of not saying what you think?

”The armour weighs 100lbs, but the resentment you are left with when you are not authentic weighs 1000lbs”. Brene Brown

5. What is your comfort zone? Do you ever step outside of it? Do you have a fixed mindset about your skills and your capacities? If you do, how does it feel? Do you test yourself? Do you push yourself? I actually find that many of my clients are completely unable to name their feelings when they are uncomfortable. Is it the same as you? Are you able to know when you are uncomfortable because you are afraid? Can you tell when you are uncomfortable because the situation goes against your values? How able are you to override your comfort zone?

6. Do you know what kind of goals you are setting for yourself? Many don’t know that goals are either intrinsic or extrinsic. Extrinsic goals are based on rewards or external prices that we get such as recognition, money, or acceptance. Needless to say, extrinsic goals only take us so far. Intrinsic goals are based on what we want for ourselves, regardless of what others think or wish for us. To get into shape, to finish a degree, to become more self-aware, to have a great relationship.

Intrinsic goals can also be tricky.

When our goals are all about the final outcome instead of the journey, there will always be a gap (achieving the goal and setting new ones) that gap can be painful. Many lose themselves for a while in that battle. The questions “What’s next?” and “What else do I want?” can bring a few moments of confusion and loss of self-worth.

For the record, I know that none of these questions are neither simple nor easy to answer. If you are truly honest with yourself you will probably find blind spots in areas where you are unsure what you are doing to remain stuck or from being authentically who you are. In that case, I suggest you talk to someone you trust. Make sure you do this with someone you love and who loves and care for you in return. If you don’t have that then a qualified counsellor can help you.

In a PodCast, I heard John Assaraf describe the brain as an “organism that sees safety above all things.” He explained that when we start to think about anything we want to do if there is any potential or real danger, our brain will, as he put it, “put the brakes on”. Our stress levels will go up. When we want to do something outside of our ‘normal’ we have to learn to override the natural tendency of our brain to self-protect.

I know you have done it, it’s like when you first went on a plane, or when you go on a roller coaster, or skydiving or a slide at the water park. You get a rush and your heart starts to pound faster, you are afraid and in your head, you go through all the things that could go wrong, but you override it and do it anyway. In the same way, we are able to override our fears of being authentic, we just need to remember why is important that we do it… we are worth it.
