Individual Therapy in Calgary
Dayami Fernandes, the founder of Conscientia Counselling, talking about Individual Counselling
Individual therapy is a broad category that involves a one-on-one relationship between the therapist and the client. It’s unique because it is the only relationship solely focused on benefiting you- the client.
Unlike other mutually beneficial relationships, the therapeutic relationship exists solely to support your well-being. We are happy to offer individual counselling in Calgary.

What Can You Talk About in Therapy/Counselling?
Many people seek therapy or counselling during a crisis, but others come for the benefit of having a compassionate, non-judgmental listener. A therapist can act as a sounding board, helping you process anything from:
- Career changes (e.g., “I’m thinking about switching jobs, but I don’t know which direction to go.”)
- Childhood trauma that may still affect your life today.
- Recurring relationship patterns (e.g., “Why do I keep having the same kind of relationships over and over?”).
- Family issues (e.g. “Why am I always fighting with my parents?”)
- Works Stress
- Bullying and its consequences
- Parenting challenges (e.g. “My child was just diagnosed with ADHD, how do I support them?”)
A skilled therapist at Conscientia Counselling provides a supportive space to explore your thoughts and concerns. Together, you will identify the most effective therapeutic approach and evidence-based counselling modalities (whether it is IFS, EMDR, CBT or other approaches) to create meaningful, lasting change and support your personal goals.
Why Choose Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy provides a confidential, supportive space to work with a trained professional who is invested in your growth and well-being. Rather than remaining constrained by past experiences, ingrained coping strategies, or unhelpful patterns, therapy helps you develop insight, resilience, and practical tools for meaningful change. At Conscientia Counselling, our goal is to empower you to move beyond these limitations, make intentional choices, and build a life that aligns with your values and potential.
A Revolving Door Approach to Therapy
At Conscientia Counselling, we don’t believe therapy should last forever. We view the therapeutic process as a revolving door, allowing clients to return for support whenever life becomes challenging. Some concerns can be addressed in a few sessions, while others require deeper work over months or years. Our goal is for you to feel confident stepping back into your life, applying what you have learned and discovered, and when new challenges arise, we hope you can return for a check-in and continue growing. This practical, real-life approach has been so effective that many clients refer their partners, siblings, and even colleagues, recognizing the value of having a neutral, supportive mental health professional by their side.

Because Books are Cheaper Than Therapy
Although you probably still need therapy.
Here are some suggestions for the over thinkers, the healers, and those who diagnose their friends at parties (lovingly, of course)

"Mindset" by Carol Dweck
This book is based on the idea that as we grow up, we cement one of two mindsets, a fixed or a growth mindset. One offers you enough emotional and psychological flexibility to challenge yourself and develop skills that you did not have before, the other one keeps you stuck on patterns that reinforce rigidity. Which one would you rather have?

"Think Again" by Adam Grant
This is a fascinating book that addressed the way we communicate with each other. Adam Grant had hit in the head the nail of the cause for the current divisiveness and ‘we-vs-them” mentality that has led to the dissolving of the social paradigms we have grown used to. A must-read for anyone who values acceptance and growth.

"Daring Greatly" by Brené Brown
In my opinion, this book is her best work. Maybe is the melancholy that it was the first one (of her many) that I read but in this book she exposes the key to emotional maturity, courageous living and the full acceptance of the fact that we are emotional beings

"Transcend" by Scott Barry Kaufman
Did you know that Maslow never intended his hierarchy of needs to be plotted into a pyramid? A marketing company did that. In this book, Scott proposes a new way of looking at what the hierarchy stands for and our need for self-actualization.

"Chatter" by Ethan Kros
Our inner voice…or is it? Sometimes our inner voice is not actually ours. Sometimes it is the combination of the voices of cynicism, fear, self-doubt, etc. of our parents, siblings, grandparents, teachers etc. The way you speak to yourself does not necessarily come from you.

"Self-Matters" by Phil McGraw
This is an old one, I know but in all honesty, this is the book that first opened my eyes to the world of psychology. When I first read this book, I was desperate for answers about my life and my upbringing. I did not know much about psychology or counselling, so I leave it here hoping it would do the same for you.
